Coal Rooms Peckham

I love a neighbourhood restaurant. They’re so much friendlier, cheaper and more relaxed than their central London counterparts. Newly opened all day eatery Coal Rooms is all these things but it’s also sophisticated, understated and inventive. The restaurant is divided into a coffee shop space, counter seats over looking the open kitchen and a light dining room with pale wood flooring. It feels big and airy and comfortable.

Now this might sound a bit weird but I knew we were about to have a great meal because of the cutlery on the table. The cutlery they use at Coal Rooms goes for about two hundred quid for a twenty four piece set in Heals. It is weighty and vintage and beautiful. It gave me the impression that nothing had been left unconsidered in terms of either style or gastronomy.

What’s good? The Bermondsey Frier – a cheese somewhere between mozzarella and halloumi, tremendous. The Buttermilk fried mackerel. The Peckham Fatboy dripping potatoes with raclette. The apple and cheddar pie. The cocktails. At least half the menu basically.

Kid friendly? Yep. They were more than happy to accommodate us.

Currently open for breakfast and dinner 7 days as well as brunch/lunch at the weekend, I’d try their much talked about bacon roll. Read the full review here. […]
