Poor Boys Kingston

I think I’ve made myself very clear in that I am a BIG fan of NOLA cuisine. So, a visit to Poor Boys in Kingston was long over due. I like this place. Surprise. Surprise. They do mac and cheese balls with hot sauce. What’s not to like? Although it’s not really a restaurant, more a bar that does good food.

Inspired after a trip to New Orleans, the Rodney Dangerfeld-esque owner is regularly in house to meet, greet and take orders. He is full of recommendations and bawdy chat. Mississippi by way of Kingston.

In the winter, on passing, the whole place is steamed up with condensation on the windows, the red neon sign glowing through. It’s a party place. It’s not geared up for small people but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t make it work. Inside is tight but they’ve got some outdoor tables and they now open for lunch too.

The general concept is that you can either stick with the traditional sandwich or swap it out for fries or macaroni or …salad. Lol. Now, the po’ boys are good here. Obviously it it’s the side that are the stars. The burnt ends, not that burnt, just lovely sweet pork belly, the macaroni cheese balls. All really deeply satisfying southern comfort food served up in enamel dishes, with a margarita if at all possible.

What’s good? The macaroni cheese balls. Yes I know I’ve mentioned them three times. Calm down. The burnt ends, the po boys. My only really complaint is that the dessert menu is so short. There was mention by Rodney of a toasted brioche pb&j which I would have loved to have inhaled but it wasn’t on the menu. I don’t know why you would do that to a woman to be honest. Also beignets! Where were the beignets?!

Kid friendly? No but it could be done if you are determined. Which I am.
