Claridges Afternoon Tea Mayfair

You may or may not be surprised to know that I have, for someone who doesn’t otherwise drink tea, sampled quite a few afternoon teas across the capital. Many people report Claridges to be the best available. So we though before we leave London for good in October to move north that we’d better try it out.

We took a black cab from Victoria station because I’m pregnant and we were running late and the cab driver made a very excited face as I asked if he could take us there, which I took as a Good Sign. When you arrive that way they give you that sort of nervous laughter inducing welcome and call you madame and hold the car door followed by the hotel door. I both love and hate this in equal measure.

It’s exactly the sort of place that the queen would go. It is incredibly fancy and plush and the loos are something else entirely. The afternoon tea is also completely lovely HOWEVER controversial opinion incoming, Fortnum and Masons is better. There I said it. I feel better. Fortnum’s have a larger range of teas, an additional fantastic brunch menu, and their sandwiches and cakes are just nicer. Sorry.

What’s good? The atmosphere and the service are so ladida and its lovely. Nothing to fault from tea to sandwiches to scones to cake to hot chocolate. They’ve got a lovely non alcoholic sparkling wine on offer too.

Kid friendly? Surprisingly. they even do a children’s afternoon tea and we spied several quite well behaved toddlers on the afternoon we attended.
