A. Wong. Victoria

A. Wong is probably the best Cantonese restaurant in the U.K. winning its first Michelin star this week but its unassuming, relaxed atmosphere and seriously reasonable prices would have you thinking otherwise.

I think this restaurant must be staffed by wizards because I cannot otherwise explain each individual dim sum dish we tried. They were all like tiny, perfect gifts. Astonishing and consistently delicious.

There’s outdoor seating so taking a baby (even a grumpy, tired baby that pooped all down their leg) isn’t a problem. None of the staff really cooed over Max but they were pretty nonchalant overall and it put me at ease.

The outdoor seating is surrounded by bamboo leaves and the other diners and the street noise absorb squawks. It doesn’t feel like an especially fancy restaurant at all until you order a cocktail and it comes out stuffed with candy floss that they then proceed to spritz with a perfume bottle filled with brandy. Ahem.

What’s good? The above mentioned cocktail for starters. The quail egg croquette puff, the rabbit and carrot puff and most importantly the duck yolk custard buns. They’re gorgeous.

Kid friendly? Certainly.
