The long awaited opening of Din Tai Fung is finally here and foodie parents can rejoice for several reasons. Firstly, the Taiwanese restaurant which probably does the best Xiao Long Bao or soup dumplings for the rest of us is exceedingly child friendly, secondly the length of the queues to eat said dumplings was vastly over stated in the press and thirdly soup dumplings.
This place is big. Old school Taiwanese restaurant big. Don’t even worry your pretty head about a buggy or a double buggy or multiple buggies big. And service is fast. There is no special kids menu and the littlest of us might struggle with unfamiliar looking food but for over threes this restaurant will be very exciting. There’s a little instruction guide for how to eat your soup dumplings that you can read to them like a bed time story and then they can play with the chopsticks (or a knife and fork if you’re desperate).
Din Tai Fung was heaving with families on our visit, they’ve got plenty of high chairs and an accessible loo with baby change plus for Covent Garden the prices aren’t bad either, considering the legendary status of the food. Most excitingly you can take the small fries to watch the dumplings being made by a sea of cooks in chefs whites and face masks. They’ve got a huge team churning out dumplings with up to 18 folds, it’s quite a display.
Kid friendly? Completely.
What’s good? All the dumplings. And the noodles and the tea. Yum. Yum.
